A PERFORMANCE by Woolwich's own King's Troop Royal Artillery was the highlight of a poignant Armed Forces Day in Greenwich.

The troop thrilled crowds at the barracks with a gun carriage and riding display, while there was a further parachuting demonstration by the Tigers display team.

This year's event was fused with the Great Get Together funday, meaning there was a host of activities on offer during a rare day of summer sunshine, including a musical performance by Charlton's former X-Factor star Jade Ellis.

Lewisham also held an event giving thanks to servicemen and women, both past and present.

In Bellingham, a service was held at the Gardens of Remembrance on Allerford Road, with an address by The Right Reverend Richard Moth, Bishop of the Forces.

And New Eltham venue The Beehive moved forward their annual Help for Heroes fundraiser in the light of Barracks soldier Lee Rigby's death, collecting an estimated £4,000 for the cause, with raffle prizes donated form businesses up and down the street.

Manager Jane Bentley said: "It was more of a celebration, a positive occasion. The biggest thing was pulling the whole community together."
