A MAN from New Ash Green died after being hit by a train at Farningham Road railway station, an inquest heard.

North Kent Coroner Roger Hatch today ruled 38-year-old Robert Baker took his own life after running into the speeding train on September 8 last year.

The inquest into his death, held at Gravesend's Old Town Hall, heard how Mr Baker, of Caling Croft, was stood next to a footbridge on the platform at Farningham Road station that morning.

The London-bound service from Dover, which was travelling between 85mph and 95mph, was not due to stop at Farningham Road station at 10.40am.

The driver saw Mr Baker turn around then suddenly dart towards the train and was not given enough time to pull the emergency break. Mr Baker hit the driver's cab window.

A woman, who heard a loud bang and saw Mr Baker lying in a "starfish position" on the platform, dialled 999 but he was pronounced dead at 11.15am.

The inquest heard Dartford-born Mr Baker was unemployed and suffered from anxiety and Asperger's syndrome.

Coroner Mr Hatch said: "Mr Baker had suffered over many years and was a proud family man who wished to provide for his family but due to his issues was unable to work."

Mr Hatch concluded Mr Baker took his own life where the balance of his mind was disturbed.
