THE contractor responsible for building the Shard is spear-heading the redevelopment project of the former Woolwich Building in Bexleyheath.

Work is well underway at the site in Watling Street, which will be Bexley Council’s new home from spring next year.

Main contractor Mace, who designed London’s tallest landmark, is behind the building’s design, construction, refurbishment and fitting-out.

The front entrance to the building is being modified to make the offices more welcoming and to ensure it meets accessibility requirements.

Bellway Homes have also started work at the rear of the building where they are preparing their site ahead of the construction of 126 new homes.

Their sales office will be open in Erith Road from June 22.

When the council moves into the Woolwich building it will leave the current Civic Offices and allow space for Tesco to create a superstore bringing 400 jobs.

Bexley Council say moving to one big site instead of four ageing offices will save around £1million a year.
