Mourners gather at Woolwich church to pay tribute to Drummer Lee Rigby - Day 3 updates

Around a dozen sat in silence in St Mary Magdalene Parish Church, in Rectory Place, offering their prayers for the 25-year-old, who lived and grew up in Middleton, Manchester.

The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, said he had come to show "solidarity" with members of all faiths shocked by the "horrifying" murder.

The bishop said: "The event has of course traumatised many people locally, and indeed across the whole nation, because of the horrifying nature of this event.

“The community has rallied together, and shown that sense of solidarity, of people of good will uniting together.”

He added: "We are simply encouraging people to come and spend some time in silent, concentrated, focused prayer.

“I wanted to come to pay my own respects and secondly to show solidarity with this community which has suffered greatly."

The mourners sat in silence as readings were given and hymns were played, just streets away from where Drummer Lee Rigby was murdered.

Some brought flowers into the quiet service.

A sign on the door read: "People of all faiths are welcome. We will be praying for those affected by the sad incident in Woolwich yesterday."

The rector of Woolwich, the rev Jesse van der Valk, paid tribute to the women who "were brave enough to stand up" to the attackers.

He told the congregation: "It's one of the incredible things that there were women brave enough to stand up to the people who carried out this killing and actually kneel with the man and to say some prayers with him."

After giving a reading from the Book of Psalms, he added: "We pray for the soul of the youngster, as we have come here to show our unity and concern for the community."

Detectives continue to question four suspects

Detectives are continuing to question a man and woman, both 29, who were arrested at a residential address in south London yesterday morning.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Lee Rigby and remain in custody at a south London police station.

Meanwhile, the two men shot by police on Wednesday – who are 22 and 28 – remain in a stable condition.

Police say they have both been arrested on suspicion of murder and are still being questioned.

Search warrants were executed at six separate addresses early yesterday morning.

Three of these were in south London, including one at Aylmer House in Eastney Street, Greenwich.

Two further warrants were executed in north and east London and another in Saxilby, Lincolnshire.

A statement issued by Lincolnshire Police late last night urged people to consider messages they were posting on Facebook relating to the search at an address in Hotchkin Avenue.

One of the suspects, believed to be 28-year-old Muslim convert Michael Adebolajo, previously lived at this address, according to reports.

It said: “We would urge people to consider the very real impact of their online comments in relation to this matter.

“We have received a number of reports from local members of the public about tweets and Facebook comments that could potentially incite racial hatred and violence.

“These are currently being investigated. If such communications are reported to us and they do breach the law, those messages may be monitored; captured and robust police action will be considered.”

Family pay tribute

In a statment, the Drummer Rigby's family said: "Lee was lovely. He would do anything for anybody, he always looked after his sisters and always protected them. He took a 'big brother' role with everyone.

"All he wanted to do from when he was a little boy, was be in the Army. He wanted to live life and enjoy himself. His family meant everything to him. He was a loving son, husband, father, brother, and uncle, and a friend to many.

"We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time."

A post mortem held on May 23 formally identified the soldier as Lee Rigby. An inquest will open in due course.
