LEWISHAM Police are urging jewellery wearers to be cautious after a 35-year-old woman had her chain ripped from her neck in Catford.

Detectives say the warm weather and fairly high gold prices have contributed towards a growing trend of victims being targeted for their ‘bling’.

The latest incident saw a woman attacked in Torriden Road on May 8 where a man grabbed her chain and snapped it off before making towards Dowanhill Road.

The suspect has been described as a black male around 6’ 2" wearing a black top and black jeans.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Ashdown, of Lewisham Serious Acquisitive Crime Unit, said: "With the warm weather and gold prices still quite high we have started to see an increase in reports of this type of crime.

"The victim was lucky not to have sustained any serious injuries we do advice people if at all possible to keep their jewellery out of sight and for people to be aware of their surroundings and stay alert to what’s going on around them."

Anyone who has information about this or similar robberies is asked to call Lewisham Serious Acquisitive Crime Unit on 020 8284 8303, or alternatively Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
