SCHOOL kids have been making links with African children through fruit trees.
Pupils from St George’s Bickley Primary School in Tylney Road have been planting as part of the Swift Weavers scheme.
Through the initiative the school has built up links with schools in South Africa and Zimbabwe and one of the joint projects between the schools focuses on growing food.
Teacher Anne Scothern said: “We planted four fruit trees, with the fruit of each matching the colour of the school houses”.
“We hope that they will grow and hope to share photos of them bearing fruit with our African schools.”
Photos and information are exchanged with the African schools through a blog as well as letters.
The pupils even write to a school for the blind, so get replies in Braille, accompanied by a translation.
Mrs Scothern said the children enjoyed the day and that despite the funding from the British Council ending the school hoped to keep up the international links.
