A BROMLEY police community support officer (PSCO) has been sentenced to seven years in prison for tipping off criminals on the location of cannabis factories and helping them evade detection.

Oguz Batmaz, of Acacia Way, Sidcup, committed the offences when he was working for the Mottingham and Chislehurst North Safer Neighbourhood team.

Batmaz accessed data on police computers hundreds of times, telling accomplices where cannabis was being grown so they could steal it, while passing on any information the police had on them.

The 27-year-old also supplied cocaine.

Judge Andrew Goymer told Southwark Crown Court today: "He misused and abused his position when he accessed information on the computer when he had no good reason to do so.

"However, it didn't end there. He then passed on the information that he looked up on the computer.

"He told them (his accomplices) what the police knew about them, what addresses were under suspicion. He was paid something for this.

"It was a very serious breach of his duty as a PSCO."

Batmaz also spent time with Wayne Farrell, a convicted drug dealer who failed to return from prison leave four years ago.

Judge Goymer told the court: "Wayne Farrell was on the run from prison. He met him a number of times and did nothing to turn him in.

"He did searches in respect of Farrell and kept him informed of what the police knew about him.

"This involved a very serious breach of trust by a person in his position."

He added: "One expects the highest standards of anyone who works in the police service.

"Anyone who breaches these high standards will be properly punished."

Batmaz admitted charges of conspiracy to conduct misconduct in public office, conspiring to steal cannabis, supply cannabis and cocaine and wilfully neglecting to perform his duties.
