AMBITIOUS plans to revamp a huge part of Gravesend town centre could be given the go-ahead this evening.
The redevelopment proposals for the Heritage Quarter by developers Edinburgh House will be discussed at a special meeting of Gravesham Council’s Regulatory Board at 7pm.
After years of often passionate debate and the rejection by the council of a previous £120m scheme in September 2010, the Civic Centre gathering will decide the fate of the latest plans.
Edinburgh House proposes to build up to 328 flats and a 50-bedroom hotel on land between West Street, Bath Street, Royal Pier Road and Queen Street.
The company says it will create 800 jobs, generate £8 million spending every year and bring major retailers and restaurant chains to the town.
But opposition campaigners such as Urban Gravesham argue the development would create a “slum” of small flats and ruin the character of the historic Western Quarter, Eastern Quarter and St Andrew’s Gardens areas.
