COMMENTATORS are speculating on how Orpington MP Jo Johnson could outshine his brother, the Mayor of London, and become the next PM.

Experts are suggesting there is a similar rivalry to that which existed between Ed and David Miliband when they were vying for the Labour leadership in 2010.

Father of Jo and Boris, Stanley Johnson, has spoken about his pride at seeing Jo pick up a new role as head of the Number 10 policy unit last Thursday (April 25) despite only being an MP for three years.

He has also spoken about his experience of helping his son campaign in Orpington.

Author and former MEP Stanley told the Daily Mail: “Jo may have started late in the political stakes, but he has certainly come on fast.

“He may be a 'European'. He grew up in Brussels, went to school there, and holds degrees from two European universities, as well as Oxford.

“But that doesn't mean he's a fanatic European.

“I've canvassed with him in Orpington. I've spoken at the Orpington Ladies Lunch Club."

The proud father is sure Jo will allay fears of those who are concerned about Britain's role in Europe.

Stanley said: “It's quite clear to me that traditional Conservative loyalists in Orpington and around the country are troubled, to put it mildly, at the current state of the relationships between Britain and Europe.

"Jo is astute enough to see that finally making good on David Cameron's 'cast-iron guarantee' of a referendum is politically wise as well as intellectually coherent."

Speculation is mounting that Jo is the rising star of the family which could rile Boris who was sacked from his shadow cabinet post in 2004.

Andrew Pierce wrote in the same newspaper: “Many Tory MPs believe that Jo is more likely than Boris to become Prime Minister.

“One backbencher says: ‘He’s is brighter than Boris, he’s nicer than Boris, he’s got less personal baggage than Boris. It could be David and Ed all over again.’

“Diffident to the point of shy, the only things he appears to have in common with Boris are his genes and blonde hair.

"No showman, he’ll never appear on TV’s Have I Got News For You or get himself stuck on a zipwire.”

The Orpington MP said: "I will continue to represent Orpington residents and campaign for them on the most important issues - securing high quality local healthcare in the town centre, delivering improved and more affordable transport links for commuters and protecting Orpington’s green and open spaces."
