Four fire engines attended and remain at the scene and crews wore breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.

A hose reel and covering jet were used to extinguish the flames.

An EllenorLions Hospice spokeswoman said: "Staff alerted the fire brigade this morning after smelling smoke coming from the basement.

"They arrived within minutes and extinguished the fire.
