Cray Wanderers were one minute away from securing their place in the Ryman Premier League again next season before a late goal gave visiting Lewes a 2-2 draw.

Cray had opened up a two goal lead against the Rooks but were unable to cling on and take the three points that would have meant certain safety.

Even so, the point from a drawn game edged the Wands up to sixteenth place with one game still to play.

That game next Saturday is away to Wingate & Finchley who are also one of the sides battling to avoid the drop.

By the time that Cray kick off against Wingate at 3pm on Saturday, results on Thursday night will have determined whether they are safe or not.

After a cagey opening spell versus Lewes the game started to develop in Cray's favour, helped by a huge slice of luck in the 35th minute.

Great work by young James Fray on the right produced a high cross into the goalmouth where the ball struck Leigh Bremner and went into net, even though he had lost track of its flight.

Cray supporters have voted Bremner their Player of the Year and even if his 24th goal of the season was a lucky one his contribution has been outstanding again for the Wands as he nears his 300th game for the club.

Cray doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Sam Long's free-kick was cleared by the visitors' defence but Jack Clark returned the ball into the goalmouth for Danny Young to gain possession and shoot home.

Young has been sidelined nearly all season after suffering a double injury in the warm-up game versus Crystal Palace, but the big defender's return to action has come at a key time for Cray with their centre half and skipper Mark Willy now on the injured list.

Nathan Crabb gave Lewes a lifeline with a goal ten minutes from time, and with the Sussex side also looking to scramble out of relegation danger there was great joy for their vocal following, but disappointment for Cray fans, when Crabb levelled the scores deep into time added-on.

Cray: Walker, Long, Clark, Day, Young, Burgess, Fray (Pooley 56), Stavrinou, Bremner, Phillips, Power.
