1988: The government announced construction would begin on Canary Wharf, located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs.

Canary Wharf took its name from No 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. There were plans to build the biggest skyscraper in Britain on this site.

1943: The South African fighter ace, Sailor Malan, became the Commanding Officer of RAF Biggin Hill. He immediately drew up new rules for airfighting which he called his Ten Commandments.

1913: Beckenham firemen, assisted by the Bromley and West Wickham Volunteer Brigades, failed to save the 15th century Manor House at Langley Park.

The fire broke out in the old dining room. It took three hours to get the engines in position by the lake. By this time fire had engulfed the entire building and it burned to the ground.
