THE Environment Agency is taking action against the Waste4Fuel recycling site in St Paul’s Cray after residents called for it to be closed down.

It has served an environmental permit suspension notice on the business meaning it has to remove all combustible waste from the facility in Cornwall Drive.

Under the terms of the notice it must clear all this waste off the site by July 15, subject to any appeal process, at a rate of no less than two articulated lorries a day and no less than 250 tonnes per week.

This comes after yesterday’s front page of the Bromley News Shopper where we reported how residents were calling on the agency to revoke Waste4Fuel’s licence.

The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority has served a separate notice which sets out the changes needed at the site to improve fire safety.

Orpington MP Jo Johnson wrote to the chief executive of the Environment Agency Dr Paul Leinster after last month’s fire which smouldered away at the site between March 18 and March 26.

Mr Johnson asked him to review whether Waste4Fuel has been respecting the terms of its licence and, if not, then take steps to revoke it.

He said: “The Waste4Fuel site has become a dangerous hazard to the local community and it is high time that it faced robust enforcement action.

“I will continue to work closely with the Environment Agency and local councillors to ensure that the operator complies in full with the notice.”
