RUSH hour commuters on and around the Dartford Crossing have again faced delays following a fatal accident in Surrey.

Traffic is queuing anticlockwise, with congestion on the A296 Princes Road around the centre of Dartford, and going heavier than usual travelling the opposite way to avoid the crash at junction 6 near Godstone.

The accident involving a lorry and a car has caused miles of tailbacks and seen traffic diverted around the junction via the entry and exit slip roads.

Drivers were warned journeys around the southern half of the orbital motorway could take as long as two hours 15 minutes.

Surrey Police said a man had died in the accident which happened shortly before 4.30am this morning (April 10).

Appealing for witnesses, the force said the collision had occurred on a section of the motorway where roadworks are in place.

The statement said: "Initial reports suggest that a blue Ford Focus had stopped in one of the live lanes with the lights off and that one of the occupants had left the vehicle and waswalking along the hard shoulder.

“The collision has then occurred, with a white Renault lorry colliding with the stationary Ford Focus and further colliding with the pedestrian.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and treated the pedestrian, believed to be a man in his 50s; however, he was pronounced dead shortly after 5am.

“The other occupant of the Ford Focus, who was still in the vehicle at the time of the collision, has been treated for minor injuries."

Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey Police's collision investigation unit on 01483 639922.
