AN ASPIRING sportsman who died following a cardiac arrest was firmly in the minds of his schoolmates who filmed a report as part of a nationwide news scheme.
The pupils at Ravens Wood School took part in the BBC School Report scheme and used it as an opportunity to publicise the issue of sudden cardiac death in the young.
Their piece was used as the lead article to profile this year’s scheme.
Included in their story was an interview with their friend Ben Daniels’s dad Paul about the effect the 15-year-old’s death had on the family.
Since their son’s death after collapsing while playing football in March 2011, his parents Paul and Helena, from Bickley, have set up the Ben Daniels Memorial Fund in partnership with heart charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
Mr Daniels said: “This sort of publicity and awareness is money can’t buy for CRY.
“Their message has been fulfilled by what the guys have done at Ravens Wood School.
“All the boys were fantastic.”
Sydenham School was one of the other schools which took part with 15 Year 9 students becoming journalists for the day and experiencing what it is like to report the news.
