IT WAS the perfect day for a dedicated Dartford charity worker who watched her team win and was presented with a special award.

Betty Hammond, 78, who lives in Burnham Road, has volunteered at the EllenorLions Hospice charity shop in Dartford High Street for 21 years and her hard work was recently recognised.

A Dartford FC season ticket holder and a fan for more than 40 years, Mrs Hammond was presented with a certificate and flowers during the half time break at her team’s 3-0 victory over Gateshead on March 23.

Mrs Hammond said: “When I retired from the post office my husband was still working and the dog didn’t talk to me much.

“I wanted to help a local cause and I knew of EllenorLions because they cared for my friend.

“I’ve volunteered for the charity for so many years because of the good work that they do and the wonderful care they provide to local people.”

The Dartford High Street shop was the first to open in 1989 and is entirely run by dedicated volunteers.

EllenorLions regional retail manager Tim Stewart said: “Betty is one of many long standing volunteers.

"Our volunteers are a vital support to our charity shops, fundraising, and offices- without them we could not maximise the amount of money we spend on our care services.”

EllenorLions Hospices has 13 shops across Dartford, Bexley and Gravesham, which all sell donated clothes, furniture, household items and accessories.
