FOUR Greenwich borough primary schools are being massively expanded to cope with rising demand for places.

Greenwich Council's cabinet has agreed the permanent increases - which will kick in from this September - to ensure there are sufficient places to cope with the borough's rising birthrate.

Charlton's Windrush in Woolwich Road will have the biggest expansion, from 210 to 840 pupils.

Alderwood in Rainham Close, Eltham, will double its capacity to 420 places, while De Lucy in Cookhill Road, Abbey Wood, will increase from 420 to 630 pupils.

In Greenwich, Randall Place's James Wolfe school will also double its places to 840.

Extra accommodation is being paid for through government grants and other funding amounting to £11.1m.

Greenwich borough's birth rate grew by a staggering 42.4 per cent between 2001 and 2011.
