A MAN who was arrested with a gun near Bromley town centre has been jailed for five years, while the police officer who arrested him has received two awards for his bravery.

Shaun Roberts, aged 50, of Bradbourne Road, Bexley, pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court to possessing a firearm and possessing ammunition.

Police Constable Jon Card was called to Kentish Way, Bromley, at 9.17pm on September 30 last year after CCTV operators noticed a male apparently collapsed in the road.

He found Roberts lying next to a traffic island but as he helped him to his feet Roberts staggered backwards and a small revolver fell from his pocket.

PC Card retrieved the weapon and began to search Roberts.

As he did so Roberts became more agitated and head-butted PC Card in the mouth while verbally abusing him.

PC Card was able to restrain Roberts, before handcuffing and arresting him.

A box of ammunition with 16 rounds in it was found on Roberts, along with a balaclava.

PC Card has been awarded a Commissioner's Excellence in Total Policing Award for Outstanding Bravery and a Safer Bromley Award in the 'Above and Beyond' category for his actions.
