FIREFIGHTERS tackling a blaze at a derelict factory in Sidcup have brought it under control.

Eight fire engines with 58 firefighters were called to the fire on the second floor of a factory in Edgington Way at 2.45pm.

The building involved, a derelict Richard Klinger factory, is close to a petrol station.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman has said crews have contained the blaze and are now dampening down.

A section of Edgington Way between the Maidstone Road junction Crittal's Corner has been closed while Sevenoaks Way was slow heading towards Crittal’s Corner.

Silvertown station manager Laurie Kenny said earlier today: “It is a very smoky fire so firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and using ladders to fight the fire through windows.

“Because it is a derelict factory it is too dangerous to go inside. “There is a pall of smoke over the area but it is dissipating fairly quickly.

“Firefighters are working really hard to put the fire out in quite difficult conditions.”

There are no reports of any injuries from firefighters at the scene."

Smoke is billowing out across Tesco car park. Eight fire engines are currently at the scene from Sidcup, Orpington, Downham, Erith and Plumstead stations.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. More to follow.
