BELVEDERE police station will now be open to the public for three hours a week.

That is according to the Police and Crime Plan for 2013 to 2016 by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).

Belvedere has been downgraded from a front counter to a contact point following the end of the public consultation period from January 9 to March 6.

Instead of being open eight hours a week offering all policing services, members of the public can make non-urgent face-to-face contact with local officers every Wednesday to Thursday between 7pm and 8pm and every Saturday between 2pm and 3pm.

Marlowe House in Sidcup will remain a front counter – open Monday to Friday from 12pm to 4pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm – while Bexleyheath police station is the only facility open 24/7.

As in the draft plan, the final MOPAC plan claims the number of police officers in Bexley will increase from 344 in 2011 to 360 by 2015, while there will be 110 Safer Neighbourhoods officers compared to 61 in 2011.

Bexley Borough Commander, Superintendent Peter Ayling, said: "We are living in tough economic times and tough decisions have been made.

"Some buildings that today are not fit for purpose have and will be shut and sold and other buildings used less.

"With 101; 999 numbers; e-mail for our 21 Safer Neighbourhoods teams; the Bexley Police website and the innovative use of social media and public information points, we are expanding ways for the public to contact us, report crime and seek advice".
