A SHOTGUN-wielding masked robber has been jailed for his part in a raid on a Bexleyheath supermarket.

Robert Worrell stormed into Sainsbury’s Local, in Avenue Road, carrying the gun and threatened staff before pointing the weapon at police.

The 35-year-old, and his accomplice Jermaine Cave, fled the store with a stash of cash at 10.40pm on August 28, 2011.

After being extradited from Spain, Worrell was found guilty at the Old Bailey for a number of offences relating to possession of an imitation firearm.

During the trial the court could not determine if the shotgun used by Worrell was real.

His pleas to robbery and possession of an imitation firearm were therefore accepted.

Yesterday (March 22) a judge sentenced him to 10 years for robbery, four years for possession of an imitation firearm and four years for resisting arrest with an imitation firearm. These will run concurrently.

He pleaded guilty in September last year to absconding from the UK after this robbery and had earlier received a four month prison sentence for that offence.

Worrell’s accomplice, 32-year-old Cave, of McMillian Street, Deptford, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on January 27, 2011, where he pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm.

He was sentenced to six years and six months imprisonment for the robbery and two years for the firearms offence, running concurrently.

News Shopper could not report this case at the time due to legal reasons.
