DEPTFORD Green School, which moved into a new £32m building last summer, has been put into special measures by Ofsted.

In a scathing report, inspectors judged pupil achievement, quality of teaching and leadership at the Edward Street school in New Cross to be inadequate. Pupil behaviour and safety also required improvement.

Lewisham Council has now appointed Bob Ellis, credited with turning around the fortunes of Conisborough College in Catford, to be the school's executive head teacher.

A January inspection at the school showed that Deptford Green's results were in decline and student progress in maths was poor with "not enough good or better teaching to overcome students’ past underachievement in mathematics."

Inspectors also wrote that the governors had "not been effective in holding the school to account" and that improvement had been held back, partly because of a large turnover is the senior leadership team.

Last year, just 46 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades at GCSE including English and mathematics, compared with 54 per cent in 2010.

Mr Ellis, who will continue to lead Conisborough alongside Deptford Green, said: "The Ofsted inspection that took place in the spring term has given the school a clear focus on the areas that need to be addressed. 

"The staff, students and their parents are committed to ensuring that Deptford Green School provides an outstanding service to our community."

He added: "At Deptford Green we enjoy access to the best educational facilities in London and we are determined to use this investment to secure the very best outcomes for our students."

A spokeswoman for Lewisham Council said: "We acted promptly in response to the Ofsted judgement and there is already new leadership at Deptford Green School that we are confident will prove effective very quickly."

The school will now undergo regular monitoring by Ofsted inspectors.

Another Labour Lewisham Mess, Is there anything this lousy Labour Council can get right? i dread to think what the PFI payments are on this. Hope People before profit get elected next time round. Labour clearly are hopeless.

Yup, more proof (if it's needed) that Labour's 'DNA' of simply chucking taxpayers' money at 'problems' doesn't work. God only knows how much their obsession with PFI has cost us all. I was born in Lewisham and it was always thus but there are too many dyed in the wool sheep there for it to change any time soon.

Well done again for underachieving Lewisham council, Steve Pillock has done little or nothing again, Joan Ruddock preserves her career politico status, we remind ourselves how the fiasco of Deptford Lounge has been handed over to parasite Mark Elms and his cronies at REach2 and rebranded the New Tidemill Academy - ofsted would do well to look into the satff turnover there were over half the staff left as soon Academy status was secured, Elms appoint his successor and Business partner, also secures his lover a neat job at The Robert Fitzoy Academy in Croydon who are only to happy to dish him the money to flagship his ego, all the time Lewisham did NOTHING, we now see these parasites destroying education where it is needed the most yet at the same time they pay themselves ridiculous wages - in Tidemill's it can be secured by PURE CRONYISM of the board just asl David Mason the Chair who recently secured his son in law's payout Richard Granham to secure enough money to get to Australia!! yet still they bury the past scandals and lack of concern to the children remeber Joe MUrray anyone ? ask Mark Elms he empoyed and gave reference to him, currently on the child offender list in the UK , but hey why would Mark Elms let that Blight his legacy? SHAME SHAME SHAME

As for Ofsted.. They're a joke! They first need to pay more attention to the types of people and their backgrounds that are being employed as teachers etc' in these schools before picking faults that reflect back on its students!
