AN ARMY Cadet Force instructor from Thamesmead has won an award for his loyal service.

Staff Sergeant Instructor (SSI) Kevin Smith, 32, received the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London’s Certificate for Meritorious Service at a ceremony in the capital.

Kevin has volunteered as an adult instructor at 10 (Belvedere) Detachment, part of South East London Army Cadet Force, for the past eight years.

A former Army cadet himself, he is second in command of the company, compiling training programmes and liaising with local services and places of interest to arrange visits and community project placements.

Speaking after his receiving his award at the Greater London Reserve Forces and Cadets Association awards ceremony on March 14, Kevin said: "I am shocked and surprised but it gives me a sense of achievement and pride in myself.

"I get a real sense of achievement from seeing the cadets succeed".
