Traffic problems in Sevenoaks Way area due to Cornwall Drive recycling plant fire

FIRE engines remain at a recycling plant off Sevenoaks Way which caught fire on Monday (March 18).

The incident in Cornwall Drive is still causing traffic problems in the area with reports suggesting Cray Road (A224) is partially blocked and long delays due to smoke blowing across the road.

There is also reportedly congestion on the A20 Sidcup Bypass eastbound to the A22 (Frognal Corner) and on the A20 westbound to Swanley Bypass.

Six fire engines were called to the recycling plant in St Paul’s Cray at about 5.50am on Monday to deal with the blaze affecting 6,000 tonnes of recycled waste.

In December 2011 a fire at a waste site in the same road caused chaos as it burned for three days.

Sevenoaks Way was shut down during the incident which caused an estimated £200,000 damage to the business.

After the protracted fire fight required last time this happened on that site, I'd have thought more precautions would have been taken to prevent a recurrence. As it is, the amount of material stored there seems to have become a small mountain in recent months and that can't have made matters easier. Given the proximity of the site to major roads and the nature reserve, I feel a major rethink is required.
