CANCER patients can now be treated at Lewisham Hospital instead of travelling miles outside the borough for life-saving chemotherapy.

Around 150 breast and lung cancer sufferers are expected to benefit from the new service launched by Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust.

Patients with lung and breast cancer will be referred to Lewisham Healthcare’s oncology service and will have chemotherapy in a dedicated outpatient suite.

Medical director for Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust Jane Linsell said: “We are delighted to launch this new service, which helps people get the healthcare they need closer to home.

“There is evidence that in the past some people with these types of cancer did not receive necessary treatment due to the difficulty of travelling out of the borough for chemotherapy – so providing services closer to home will address this.”

Local GP and Chair of Lewisham’s Clinical Commissioning Group Dr Helen Tattersfield added: “It is important to stress that it is very much ‘business as usual’ at the Trust.

"No services are changing in the near future, and I would urge local people to choose Lewisham Hospital for their care.”
