AFTER years of rejecting the idea, bicycles may finally be allowed on the DLR in a trial scheme.

The off-peak trial is mentioned in papers outlining Boris Johnson's vision of a "Crossrail for the bike", which was set out earlier this month.

London Assembly members including Len Duvall, Caroline Pidgeon and Jenny Jones have repeatedly raised the issue with the Mayor of London over the past few years.

However, Mr Johnson had previously claimed that the elevated stations would cause safety problems for people transporting bikes, while trains and platforms would suffer from capacity problems.

Ms Pidgeon said: "For a long time I have argued that if bikes can be taken on most trains at off peak hours then they should also be allowed on the DLR as well outside commuter hours.

"This trial is long overdue and will benefit many people, both north and south of the Thames, who want to get around London by bike."

A Transport for London spokesman said no details were yet available for when the trial might take place or how it would work.
