TALL ships will grace the Thames off Greenwich again this year.

Sail Royal Greenwich, which launched last year, will be held from August 28 to September 1 this time around.

A fleet of tall ships, moored off Woolwich, will provide afternoon and river cruises throughout the visit.

They will travel through the Thames Barrier, towards The O2, taking in views of the Old Royal Naval College, the Cutty Sark and Canary Wharf.

Laurens Winkel of Sail Royal Greenwich said: "It is a fantastic way to enjoy the maritime heritage and iconic Thames-side views of this unique and historic area.

"Last year we saw more than 12,000 people join us and we’re really looking forward to building on that success this summer."

Before the powers that be start patting themselves on the back regarding the tall ships visit, it should be recalled that last year, on one of the hottest days of the summer many, many people waited patiently on Greenwich pier to see the ships go by. The fact is, they didn't!!! For one reason or another they turned round at the Thames barrier and went back up the river. The large crowd that had gathered were not informed what was happening and eventually they all went home!
