FIRE crews rescued nine people, including a baby and two children, from a stairwell fire at a Sydenham block of flats.

The blaze was reported on March 8 in Sydenham Road shortly after 9pm and several people stayed on the phone to the London Fire Brigade’s control team, who gave them fire survival guidance while they waited to be rescued.

All rescued people were treated by the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation, while two adults and two children were taken to hospital.

Six other people escaped before the arrival of the brigade and were not thought to be injured.

The cause of the fire, which was under control by 10.42pm, is under investigation.
