Greenwich cable cars will close for week of maintenance work
GREENWICH’S cable cars will grind to a halt for one week while “essential” maintenance work takes place, says Transport for London (TfL).
The Emirates Air Line - between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks - will be closed between March 18 to 24 while safety checks are carried out such as inspecting cable car weight and sheave wheels.
Boris Johnson’s £60m flight line has previously closed in high winds and been criticised for low passenger usage with the lowest recorded being 14,755 in the week ending February 2.
TfL’s head of Emirates Air Line Danny Price said: “This short period of maintenance work is an essential part of the ongoing operation of the Emirates Air Line and will mean there will not be any other planned closures this year.
“We apologise to anyone affected and have tried to ensure it is taking place at a time when it will cause the least disruption.”
During the closure, North Greenwich tube station offers the nearest alternative public transport service. Bus services also run from North Greenwich bus station and river services from North Greenwich Pier.
