CATFORD could change for good over the next decade, and Lewisham Council wants your comments on the plans.

From the road networks to the shopping centre and the rapidly-emptying housing estate that looms above it, the council hopes to transform the town centre.

One of the biggest planned changes is the redevelopment of the shopping centre and Milford Towers estate by demolishing the buildings and rebuilding them with a new scheme featuring a flagship supermarket, new ground floor retail space, an improved street market and up to 200 homes.

Council services currently based at Laurence House are set to relocate to the civic centre over the road, leaving the old building free for redevelopment including a further 250 new homes along with retail, community or leisure space.

And large scale redevelopment is also planned for the Plassy Road island which could see more shops alongside up to 350 homes.

Elsewhere, the former Greyhound Stadium site, now owned by the Greater London Authority looks set to finally be developed while the Wickes and Halfords site could also be used for a mixed use scheme.

Among the road changes being considered are widening Sangley Road and simplifying the pedestrian crossings at the junction between Catford Road and Rushey Green.

Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Councillor Alan Smith said: "The council wants to hear how local residents, businesses and employees would like to see Catford redeveloped over the next ten years.

"These plans will look at everything - housing, traffic, transport, shops and public spaces.

"They will quite literally shape the future Catford Town centre, so it’s really important we hear from everyone it might affect."

A consultation on the plan, which could be formally adopted by the council later in the year, runs until April 5.
