Your views: Is there room for religion in high street?

Christian preacher Josh Williamson was threatened with police action for using an amplifier in Woolwich Christian preacher Josh Williamson was threatened with police action for using an amplifier in Woolwich

News Shopper’s website reported last week how Christian preacher Josh Williamson was threatened with police action for using an amplifier in Woolwich. EMILY BERTWISTLE asked shoppers for their views on religious street campaigners.

BAPTIST minister Mr Williamson was spreading the good news in Powis Street on February 20, using a board equipped with an amplifier which played a reading of St John’s Gospel.

But an enforcement officer from Greenwich Council approached the 27-year-old and told him to turn the volume down, before ordering him to switch it off completely.

He told News Shopper: “The issue seemed to be the message rather than the amplification.

“What right does a council officer have to determine what the British public should and shouldn’t hear?”

After being threatened with police action, officers arrived at the scene but did nothing to stop the noise and Mr Williamson was free to continue the Lord’s work.

What shoppers said:

Richard Cranfield

Richard Cranfield, 51, of Ampleforth Road, Abbey Wood, said: “I think it's wrong the council tried to take him away because we’re a free, democratic society.

“As long as you’re not inciting racial hatred, you should be able to air your views.

“My dad fought in the Second World War for our freedom of speech.”

Martin Bonde)

Martin Bonde, of Iron Mill Lane, Crayford, said: “It can be a bit in-your-face.”

The 45-year-old added: “People shouldn’t be forcing their views on others.”

Sean McCartan

Sean McCartan 25, from Woolwich, said: “I believe people have a right to practice and preach their religion.

“However, I don’t think they should shove it down other people’s throats.”

Susan Hoskins

Susan Hoskins, 65, of Wenvoe Road, Bexleyheath, said: “I think it’s brilliant.

“This is free speech. As long as it’s peaceful, it’s fine.”

Have your say

What do you think about religious preachers on the street? Are they just exercising their right to free speech or are they a nuisance? What about other people you meet on the street, such as charity collectors – are they are a welcome sight or an unwanted obstruction? Add your comments below.

I think being threatened with police action is a bit over the top but when Im out and about shopping etc I dont want to hear people harping on about their religious beliefs and what they think I should be believing in. There are places to do this i.e. churches and thats where it should say.

The same as I dont want people knocking at my door trying to preach to me. They are even more annoying than street preachers!

When I want religion I go to church which I do on a regular basis.

I don't want to be hounded on the street by lay preachers, jehovas wittnesses or mormons nor anyone else thank you very much!

I believe what I believe in and don't want anyone else forcing theirs on me.

To be fair your comments can be applied to charity collectors too, if I want to donate money to a charity I'll do it, don't come up to me while I'm going about my business and beg me to donate, sort of defeats the point of it being charity if I'm forced to give you money.

Religion throughout history has been the cause of most wars, and always will be. Religion has caused thousands to be killed by terrorists using a twisted sense of religion to justify their actions. Sexual abuse has been committed by people in positions of trust within the church. Need I go on???

I don't think this has anything to do with religion. He was stopepd because he was using a Public Address system, the amplifier. It doesn't matter if he was promoting a shop, the fact is he used the equipment without a licence. We have these local bylaws for a reason, to stop the huge numbers of people from peddling whatever it is LOUDLY while we go about our business. Few people go to church compared to those that don't. There are about 7 Christian churches within a mile, mile and a half of Powis Street and I bet they are not full on any service. if people want it they know where to find it, we don't need some bible basher preaching to those who don't want converting. I'm an athiest, thank god.

Religion is a dirty word. Too many religions stipulate that their followers must spread the word and convert others to the same religion. Belief is a beautiful thing, but belief does not insist you go out on the street, or anywhere else, and try to get others to share your belief. Long live the believers.

Religion throughout history has been the cause of most wars,.... When was the last real war to do with religion. To judge the past in the present is to make a twunt of ones self.

Religion has caused thousands to be killed by terrorists using a twisted sense of religion to justify their actions......... True terrorist will use what ever they can to fight for their belief. This is the fault of the terrorist not the fault of a religion.

Sexual abuse has been committed by people in positions of trust within the church..... and teachers and bus drivers and Scout leaders and sports coaches etc etc. Need I go on??????

Religion/terrorist - chicken/egg.
Religion is still at the root of a lot of the problems with our world. Of course there are sexual abusers throughout society, but I think you'll find the Catholic church has more than its fair share.
