Bexley Council freezes council tax for 2013/14

BEXLEY Council has agreed to freeze council tax for the fourth consecutive year.

The council’s cabinet committee approved the proposal for 2013/14 during a meeting at Bexley Civic Offices last night. (March 4)

Council leader Teresa O’Neill hailed the decision as a "somewhat historic moment".

She said: "Where petrol and food costs are going up, we are pleased, as a result of financial strategic planning, we can freeze council tax for the fourth year running."

With the mayor’s part of the council tax showing a small fall, residents living in a Band D property will see a reduction in their annual bill of £3.72.

Labour councillor Munir Malik opposed the move, branding it a"luxury" and  local services have been lost as a result.

A central government grant has been offered to councils choosing to freeze council tax.
