OLYMPIC athlete Conrad Williams opened a programme of events to boost healthy living in Bellingham on Saturday.

The Hither Green-based 400m runner backed the Healthy Bellingham launch at Christ Church, in Bellingham Green, which aims to target health issues such as cancer, heart disease and mental wellbeing.

More than 200 people attended events in Christ Church, St Dunstan’s Church, Bellingham Green and Bellingham’s Gateway Youth Centre.

The Healthy Bellingham programme will be rolled out over the next three years as part of the wider Well London scheme with support from Lewisham’s Public Health Directorate.

Leader of Lewisham Labour Group and chair of Bellingham’s Health Forum Councillor Alan Hall said: “It is a fantastic start to improving the life chances of residents on the Bellingham Estate to have Conrad Williams supporting our event.

“Bellingham has recognised health needs and we have a varied programme to address problems such as cancer, heart disease and mental wellbeing over the next three years.”

The launch event was organised by Bellingham Community Project, Phoenix Community Housing and the Co-operative - brought together by the Bellingham Health Forum which handles a budget of £300,000.
