Lewisham arrests in Operation Big Wing
1:34pm Wednesday 27th February 2013 in News By Mark Chandler
LEWISHAM'S borough commander was out on the streets today as officers made 15 arrests in a London-wide crime clampdown.
Police taking part in Operation Big Wing started at 6am and by midday had made arrests for domestic violence, criminal damage, breach of bail, immigration and theft offences.
Chief Superintendent Russell Nyman also gathered his team at Lewisham town centre's clock tower for a street briefing where residents could raise their concerns.
He said the day would see officers out in force for high visibility policing, cracking down on burglary, anti-social behaviour and domestic violence.
Mr Nyman said: "I want offenders to be in fear of that knock on the door which will only be a matter of time in coming."
The borough commander added that seven gang members had been arrested and taken directly to court in the operation.
He said he had been out in Deptford this morning, adding: "It's good to work with the staff in the frontline. It's good to meet members of the community and the public."
Last week saw the Downham Tavern raided, resulting in the arrest of 20 people, along with the seizure of Class A drugs and offensive
weapons.
The pub's licence was suspended at a licensing meeting in Catford town hall last night.
He said: "If the community are telling us any area is a problem we'll take appropriate and proportionate action."
