A WOMAN will definitely be the next MP for Lewisham Deptford if Labour retains the seat at the next election.

Following the news that Joan Ruddock is standing down, her party has announced that the candidate shortlist for her seat will be all-female.

Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman, who announced plans for four other all-woman lists for London seats, said: "Equality is not just an important principle - a balanced team works better in practice.

"Women MPs speak up for women, championing issues in Parliament like domestic violence, equal pay and childcare."

Among those people expected to feature on the shortlist are Councillor Vicky Foxcroft from Brockley ward and Councillor Janet Daby who currently represents Whitefoot.

Florence Nosegbe, a councillor in neighbouring Lambeth who represents Brixton Hill, is also expected to enter the contest.
