Bromley Council gives man recycling box with dead spiders inside

Bromley man is given recycling box full of dead spiders Bromley man is given recycling box full of dead spiders

A BROMLEY man got more than he bargained for when he ordered a recycling bin and was given one with dead spiders inside.

James May, 26, was kept waiting for two months after he ordered a recycling bin for his new house in Addison Road in December.

After several phone calls and re-submitting the order, Mr May was rewarded with a recycling bin  complete with cobweb and dried up spiders.

He said: "It was difficult enough getting the bins in the first place, but I didn’t expect they would come with the added bonus of dead things inside.

"I don’t like admitting it but I’m a bit afraid of spiders.

"For ages, around the Christmas period, I just had to put my recycling in black bin bags and I dread to think what my neighbours thought of me, it didn’t give a good impression.

"I understand they want to re-use recycling bins but they could have least have cleaned it out first."

Mr May tweeted a picture of the arachnid-infested bin to the Bromley Council Twitter feed with the hashtag "disgraceful".

Yep - definitely on the outside. From what I can see the inside is quite clean

But surely all he has to do is put papers or bottles & cans into the box, and is he going to clean it out each time is emptied?

Shock horror! Must have been truly traumatic to find a dead spider or two in that box. lol
What's he going to do when real live spiders from his garden turn up in that box? lol

Anyway, I suggest the reporter learns the meaning of the word 'infested' because that box clearly isn't!

Given how much council tax we pay i think the issue at hand is the fact that the condition the bins were received in was unacceptable given the 2 month wait. The condition of the bin was not truly reflected in the photo. It only shows the outside and fails to show the spider infestation that is inside but covered by the recycling.

Marty1979 says...

Why has the wait got anything to do with the condition?

I expect the boxes are stored outside -but I see (if Gremma is correct) he managed to put stuff in the box

To clear the little bit of web off the handle all he needed to do is brush it or even pour water over it

Never mind, I expect he can find a lawyer to sue the council for his hurt feelings and distress - expect he can't sleep at nights

What a non story! These boxes are not sterile food storage, they are for putting rubbish in..... Nothing else to report on News Shopper?

This story is the greatest example of the NANNY nation we have become.

Jimmy May grow a set FFS and man up. There's no way you are a real Englishman. NO WAY !!

For the love of god man - try washing it out! And the spiders were dead. And as for the reporting, I am certain the box was not 'full' of spiders.

Slonik says...

A bucket of hot soapy water and brush is all that's required FGS! I could understand the problem if the box was full of black widows of something. Some folks really need to wake up and smell the coffee. Govt., whether local or national can't do EVERYTHING for you and the more they do the more it will cost so don't go whining on about how much tax you pay.

Order a salad from Tesco. They contain the perfect means for removing dead spiders...

has nothing else really happened in the area to make this a worthy story of putting on here? Dear oh dear!!

I suspect that the 'dead' spiders were in fact just shed skins. This happens everywhere, all the time. A bit of kitchen roll to wipe off the debris, job done. Somebody really needs to get a life!

If people who reported these "non stories" just took a minute to think they might realise how daft they make themselves look

An "infestation"???? Consider how large a spider is, for the box to be full there would need to be several thousand. More likely one spider with it's web and shed skin

This story wasn't even worth webbing. There's enough spun news on the Shoppershite, I mean site anyway!

People really do have to lighten up on here!

It was my box, my only gripe with the situation is the fact I didn't get my boxes for two months.

This all during the two month period after christmas where all my food waste and rubbish accumulated. It was disgusting and the council should be ashamed quite frankly. I am paying for a service through my council taxes that is inefficient.

So my recycling service isn't the biggest part of where Council Tax goes to I get that too, but it all plays a part.

The fact the box came covered, in spiders is irrelevant.

Also I didn't chase after the News Shopper with my story I just did a harmless tweet with no intention of anything further.

Sounds like your gripe was the state of the box

Or did you not say that?

It actually appears as a quote from you, so if as you state News Shopper are telling lies then you should make a complaint and demand the article is removed (you might get compensation)

I agree, people need to chill out a bit. Sounds like it was just a simple tweet and the newspaper had a bit of fun with it. Its quite a sad indication of the times we live in that someone automatically raises the issue of compensation. Compensation for what? What harm has been done?

Come on Joe, read the article ""I don’t like admitting it but I’m a bit afraid of spiders."

Which is probably why there's no photo of him (with folded arms)

Wimp

Note how Smiffy aint taken any responsibility either reasonable75. One has to ask does he suffer from arachnophobia too.

The newshopper actually approached mr.may after he sent a cheeky tweet to bromley council about the bins. If you were a new tennant and waited over two months for a recycling box then im sure you wouldnt be happy also. The fact it was recieved in that state only adds to the unprofessional way bromley council have conducted themselves. These sacrastic comments are really missing the point.

reasonable75 says...
7:41am Thu 28 Feb 13

But he has made more of the web (grossly exaggerated ) than the time the box took to arrive

banjo8 says...
8:52am Thu 28 Feb 13

Ah come on, it's just newpapers making it into more of a story. He probably did go on more about the time it took to arrive than the web but newspapers want a good story - not to mention that the spider's web gives them a picture to go with it.
