FIREFIGHTERS wearing breathing apparatus had to rescue a woman as fire tore through a house in Penge.

Six other people managed to escape on their own from the blaze in Croydon Road which completely destroyed the building’s roof.

It is believed the fire started accidentally and may have been caused by a light.

Crews from West Norwood, Woodside, Croydon, Peckham, Forest Hill, and Beckenham were at the scene after being called at 11.43pm on Saturday night (February 9).

They had the fire under control by 2.30am the next day.
