Mother gives birth in Eltham surgery car park
STAFF at an Eltham surgery are “buzzing” after a woman dramatically gave birth in their snowy car park this morning.
The parents were en route to Queen Elizabeth Hospital when the baby’s head started appearing and they were forced to pull over in the car park of Eltham Medical Practice.
Doctor Mayooran Siva dropped his duties and rushed out into the cold – opening the couple’s car to find a baby girl’s head already visible at around 9.30am.
The 36-year-old said: “I thought someone in labour is going to be six to 10 hours.
“But I opened the door and all I could see was the baby’s head.
“The husband was pretty shocked.
“You never expect that - in a car, in the snowy weather, in a car park – I thought it was going to be a bit tricky but luckily she did really well.”
Dr Siva says the birth took around five minutes and they wrapped the healthy newborn in her mother’s dressing gown with the car’s engine switched on to keep her warm.
The doctor – who has helped deliver babies in training but not as part of his practice – says he just directed the couple and praised the mother’s efforts.
He said: “If anyone is to praise, it is the mother – it was her first baby. She was in a lot of pain obviously.
“She started pushing the baby. All I had to do was direct."
After the birth, the family were brought inside the surgery in Court Yard and taken to hospital by paramedics.
Receptionist Mel Curtis, 39, said: “We are still buzzing about it now.
“They are not one of our patients. They just happened to be driving down the road and the baby’s head appeared pretty dramatically so they pulled into the surgery."
