A MAN tried to abduct a nine-year-old girl as she walked to school in Sydenham yesterday (February 5).

The girl was walking along Thorpewood Avenue at about 8.30am when she was approached by a man who tried to get her into a nearby vehicle.

She managed to get away and raise the alarm.

The suspect is described as being white, between 20 and 40 years of age and of medium build.

He was wearing a green padded coat, blue jeans and a black cap.

The vehicle is described as a large blue vehicle with a large scratch on the bonnet.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg Pople, from Lewisham Police, said: “We do not wish to cause alarm amongst parents but we would ask them and their children to remain vigilant.

"We would equally encourage anyone to alert police immediately by calling 999 if they are approached."

Anyone with information can also call Lewisham CID on 020 8284 8324 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Seriously?!? I have lived round these parts my whole life and my mother never used to let me walk to school on my own until I was at secondary school. Same for my children who are now 12-16. These parents need to show some responsibility and protect their child by TAKING THEM YOURSELF. Why have children if you won't look after them properly. Too many dodgy people around.

thank you you's two my daughter's 9 nearly 10 and it's not safe to allow your kids to walk freely by themselves. My daughters head teacher suggested to me a few weeks back about letting her walk independently home alone so she will be ready for secondary school, I said hell no until im sure she could look after her self i will be walking her to and from school don.t care what the school says we have to protect our children not leave them to protect them selves whilst we just hope nothing happens to them.
