THE Paralympics have inspired a new after-school sports service for disabled children who attend mainstream schools.

AbilitySports aims to promote physical and social development and independence and organisers got the ball rolling last month with the first club meeting at Crofton Primary School in Towncourt Lane, Orpington.

Founder Susan Bushell said: "So far it been a great hit, shown both by the enthusiasm of the children and by the positive response from parents of the children attending the club.

"I am overwhelmed by the level of support for the club from professionals and parents alike.

"Our next challenge is to increase awareness of the clubs amongst schools, parents, children and other agencies, and to raise funds to enable us to buy more specialist sports equipment so that we can open similar clubs in other areas of the borough."
