Marriage proposal on giant billboards in Charlton Asda car park

A PLUMSTEAD mum was only expecting a walk down the supermarket aisle when giant billboards lit up with a marriage proposal in Charlton’s Asda car park.

Kerri Grimsley went "scarlet" with surprise after her partner-of-13 years hijacked the advertising spot above her usual parking space to pop the question.

The 30-year-old checked out with a fiancé on top of her weekly shop after she said "yes" to cheers from passersby outside the store in Bugsby Way at noon on Monday.

Dance teacher Ms Grimsley lives with her husband-to-be Wayne Eldridge - who ditched convention for the more "quirky" wooing - and their two children in a house off Winns Common.

She told News Shopper: "I had no idea – it was a real shock to be honest because Wayne is not a romantic in that way so I was quite surprised.

"But it was a very nice surprise.

"My little girl was over-the-moon."

The couple hope to tie the knot around May next year with five-year-old daughter Georgina and two-year-old son Bobby starring as bridesmaid and page boy.

DJ Mr Eldridge, who is also chief executive of charity One Life UK, , says the timing had never been right before but now he is ready for wedding bells.

He had been plotting the proposal for three months and was bursting to share the secret.

The 38-year-old said: "It was brilliant, she went absolutely scarlet.

"‘The quirkiness [of the proposal] – that is what she is like.

"I have got a million quirky ideas – probably get married on a boat on the Thames."

But he may have to convince his betrothed who wants to opt for a "smaller" affair and who said "definitely not!" to the idea of a follow-up ceremony in a car park.
