A HUSBAND and wife have raised a "mind blowing" £7,000 for charity scaling the dizzying heights of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Bexley GPs Dr Surjit Kailey and Dr Lakhbir Kailey decided to donate the money to Demelza children’s hospice inspired by a receptionist at his Northumberland Heath practice who volunteers for the charity.
The couple took on the gruelling seven day climb and two day descent of the Tanzanian mountain - the highest in Africa at nearly 6000m - in the last two weeks of October.
Dr Kailey, who works at the Welling Medical Practice, joined her husband in presenting the cheque for £6,889 to Demelza community fundraiser Kate Najdowski on January 23.
Dr Kailey said: "I just want to thank all the colleagues, friends and patients who supported us.
"The staff at our practices have been wonderful.
"Our initial target of about £4,000 was easily surpassed so this sum is just mind blowing."
He added: "It was exhausting but a fantastic feeling to be on top of Africa."
