A fun-loving actor is providing the light relief in an antiwar classic.

Steven George from Charlton will be stepping back in time to play Trotter in RC Sherriff’s play, Journey’s End, at Greenwich Theatre.

Based in the dugouts of WWI trenches, the drama looks at how different personalities coped with life on the frontline.

Steven told Vibe: “Most of what I do is comedy, even in this play the character I play is the light relief.

“He tries to keep everyone happy – like me.

“He’s very much a working class, Cockney guy and he got promoted through the ranks.

“Someone like him wouldn’t be an officer, but there were so many deaths he got promoted by default.”

Other than the dugout servant, Trotter is the only working class man in the group.

Steven, a former Lewisham College student, added: “It’s incredibly well written.

“The guy who wrote it was in the war himself, so it’s a firsthand account.

“The relationship between the guys in the dugout really draws me to it.

“It shows how different men adapt and deal with horrors of the war, and mixes drama with comedy.”

Cast members have been researching the war to help them relate to their characters.

And although Steven, 39, is thrilled to be in the play, he hopes one day to star in a sitcom.

He continued: “I’ve done quite a few plays, mainly fringe stuff.

“I’ve also appeared on The Bill as a hit and run car crash victim – that was fun.

“You can see me in a Sainsbury’s car insurance commercial, and there’s another one coming out for the drugs charity FRANK.

“It sounds really corny, but I play a butcher who’s passing around a joint of meat.

“I’d love to be a regular character in a sitcom on TV.

“My favourite of all time is Only Fools and Horses.”

The passionate actor, who also works in security, encouraged people from the area not to miss the production by Sell A Door Theatre Company.

He added: “It will be an educational evening and you will see some great local acting, of course.

“There will be a mix of emotions all in one night.”

Journey’s End runs between February 9 and February 17.
