Silver medals for Bexley athletes competing in Australian youth Olympics

TWO of Bexley’s up and coming sports stars have won silver medals at the Australian Olympic Youth Festival.

Olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith earnt a silver medal in the women’s 63kg weightlifting competition, which was held in Sydney at around 4am UK time.

Zoe lifted 88kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, giving her a total of 200kg in the final of the competition.

She was beaten only by Chinese weightlifter Wei Deng who lifted a total of 235kg.

Twelve-year-old gymnast Catherine Lyons, who trains at the Europa Centre in Crayford, was part of the victorious Team GB women’s artistic team who narrowly missed out on a gold medal.

The team was scored a total of 160.064 and was only beaten by China, who scored 160.963.

A total of 120 Team GB athletes aged between 13 and 19 are competing in the competition, which runs until Sunday.
