Bromley binmen strike back on after Unite union and Veolia deal breaks down (From News Shopper)

Colin Smith did not like the deal that Veolia & the Unite made, so he interferes & breaks it of his own volitian.

Accordingly, it will be thanks to Colin Smith if our rubbish starts piling up.

I don't like siding with members of Militant Tendency, but just for once a Militant supporter is correct.

The men have been rehired (the rightness of that move is another matter). But the councils position seems reasonable - sounds like its the union, having been let down by its own members putting their hands up to the charges, is looking for any excuse, however petty, to walk out.

Mr Union-Man's being very quiet about Cllr Smith's revelations regarding the 880lbs of garden waste plus car seats removed and the cash accepted. I wonder why? lol He seems to be arguing about an entirely different aspect now so has he finally accepted this version of events as fact?

The facts really are quite simple. When Unite and Veolia met to negotiate, Veolia had Bromley on the end of the phone. Bromley made a number of demands which in there own words would lead to the men returning to Bromley. Perhaps to Bromleys surprise, we agreed those demands in full. If Cllr Smith is to be believed, Council Officers made an agreement without his knowledge. Veolia at no point stated that the Council had told them the four could not return to Bromley until Friday last week after an agreement was reached with the full involvement of Council Officers. Is it any wonder then that when employers can not abide by negotiated agreements, we exercise our right to take action?
There is no rewriting of history, nor any name calling from me. Just a statement of the facts.
But even though we have been wronged, I am happy to report to residents that we have approached Veolia with a view to an alternative agreement that hopefully will satisfy all and avoid a dispute next week.
As for the 70's jibe, I will bring the flared jeans you bring the space hopper.

Given he hasn't disputed them, I take it that Mr Union-Man now accepts the version of events offered by Cllr. Smith. I seem to recall the union's original stance on this matter being a bit different. Quelle surprise...

Don't understand the relevance. Yes I give tips for good service but I expect the recipient to be honest and pay the tax on it. Otherwise they are thieves. Quite simple really. So simple that if you think for a bit you might understand it

The council charges for bulky waste collection. By pocketing a fee for such collection they are stealing from the council (i.e. the council taxpayer). No different if a shop assistant takes the money for goods (even at a 'discounted' price) and doesn't put it through the till. Just because it's the downtrodden workers against the evil management doesn't change the principle.

And if they have not declared the income they are also guilty of tax evasion.

That is rubbish (!). Deception would be lying, who has lied?,and in any event to lie is not in itself a criminal offence. As for "the Theft Act", are you arguing that they intended to permanently deprive a householder of her rubbbish? (definition of theft is to permanently deprive somebody of their property). Are you suggesting that they are not paying tax on their wages? If so report the matter to Veolia. Arguably the company that dispose of garbage that Bromley Council do not collect might have a case for an action in the Small Claims Court, but that would be a minor civil court action, not Old Bailey with a Judge wearing a black cap.

And if the police thought that the men were "thieves" then the police would have been involved.

The men committed a sackable offense. They should get over it. Why should the union inconvience everyone to support these people? Personally I wish that companies could simply sack anyone that goes on strike. If they don't want to work, there's plenty of other's that do.
