MOTORISTS were stranded in freezing temperatures on the A2 last night as the road remained closed following the overturning of a car transporter.

Kent Police handed out blankets to cold motorists as the London-bound carriageway remained closed until nearly 1am.

Drivers who had been stuck in the queues since the incident at 2.55pm found the batteries in their cars becoming flat and their vehicles running out of fuel, meaning they needed to be recovered from the hard shoulder.

The driver of the car transporter suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to Kent Police.

A motorist, who it is believed was hit by a falling car on the opposite side of the carriageway, also suffered minor injuries.
