New Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer development for Charlton
4:43pm Monday 14th January 2013 in News By Mark Chandler
A NEW Sainsbury's and M&S superstore will open in Charlton after plans were approved last week.
The project will see the Bugsby's Way Sainsbury's store relocate to a two-floor site at Gallions Way, beside Woolwich Road.
Existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the new development, which will include a number of other retail outlets and parking for 695 vehicles.
A two-level Marks and Spencer store will feature a food hall along with areas selling clothing, homeware and furniture.
Greenwich Council's planning committee, which deferred the application last November due to concerns over its effect on other shopping centres in the borough, agreed the plans with a number of conditions.
These included a review of the left turn in, left turn out arrangement along Woolwich Road one year after construction.
Objections had been raised by groups including the Charlton Society that the single entrance and exit point would put strain on Bugsby's Way and Gallions Road.
