British Red Cross issues severe weather advice
THE British Red Cross (BRC) is urging people to prepare for severe weather as snow is set to sweep the UK.
It has emergency teams ready to respond to extreme weather and says taking a few simple steps can help keep people safe.
BRC London emergency planning and response manager Kevin Sapsford said: “With a weather warning in place across the city it is vital people get ready to deal with adverse conditions.
“Taking simple steps to prepare makes a massive difference and could, in extreme circumstances, help save a life.
“Putting together an emergency kit to take with you on the move or keep at home is a great way to start – being sure to include items such as a torch, spare batteries, emergency contact details, bottle water and if travelling by car, consider taking a shovel.”
The BRC is running Ready for Winter – a campaign to encourage people to gear up for severe weather.
Tips on how to prepare include:
- Stay informed about bad weather – check severe weather warnings from the Met Office and flood warnings in England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
- Take time now to prepare an emergency kit full of essentials for your home and your car- plus a kit for when you’re on the move.
- Don't have time to learn first aid? Download the Red Cross first aid app at redcross.org.uk/mobileapp
- Make sure you have alternative ways to keep warm in case your home heating is disrupted, and take extra clothing if you are going out in the car.
