Sticking to those well-intended New Year’s resolutions of getting fit can be even harder if you’ve just had a baby.

Before Thursday, I imagined looking after a newborn to be quite an isolating and boring experience.

But after joining the energetic, happy and driven Running Mummies during one of their classes in Greenwich Park this week, I have a whole new and exciting take on motherhood.

“You’re all Superwomen.” Michelle Brooks Evans shouts at her class, while rocking one of the mums’ little boy in her arms.

“After having four children, you do get a good shouting voice.” She tells me.

Possibly the friendliest woman I’ve ever met, Michelle’s barks of encouragement get mums of newborns and toddlers running, working on their abs and making new friends all year round.

The wonderful club enables women to exercise together without worrying about childcare, because all little ones are welcome – and no-one here is going to cast judgemental glances at the sound of a crying infant.

Fiona Bridges, 32, is a mum-of-two who braved the frosty weather and joined the class for the first time on Thursday morning.

She told Vibe: “As a new mum, Michelle’s friendliness is almost as good as the class itself.

“I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would.

“One thing which put me off going before was competitiveness in other classes - I didn’t like the idea of people marching, trying to beat each other.

“But you could decide the pace, slow or fast.

“I didn’t feel frowned upon for going at my own pace.

“It was really, really lovely and there was a nice variety of stuff as well, not just running around the park like I imagined.”

Fiona brought along her nine-week-old baby girl Georgina, who luckily slept in her buggy for the entire one-hour class.

She added: “It’s so unusual that you can take a bit of time to do something for yourself without compromising time with your baby.

“I hope to stick with it, I’m definitely going back next week.”

The yummy mummies go for a drink and a natter in the park’s coffee shop after the class.

Now in its seventh year, Running Mummies members include lawyers, nurses, cake makers and doctors.

Some members are just starting out on their fitness regimes, while others are preparing to run half marathons.

Whichever stage they’re at, the mums were a real inspiration to watch.

This is far more than an exercise class.

It’s a powerful support network of women who have each other’s backs.

It might be chilly outside, but it’s anything but frosty at Running Mummies.

The group meets every Thursday morning at 10.15am and each session costs £6.
