A YELLOW box van fell from the top of the Woolwich Ferry last night and nosedived on to the deck below.

Scores of firefighters and police were called out to the incident which happened at around 8.10pm, shortly after the boat left the south bank of the Thames on its last journey of the evening.

One eye-witness told News Shopper the van had rolled off the top, through the chain barrier, landing upright on the stern.

The ferry returned to the Greenwich side of the river where fire crews worked with ropes to lift the van back up again.

One of the people who was with the van at the time fled once the ferry returned to shore and has now been reported by police for alleged vehicle condition offences.

A Transport for London spokesman confirmed no one was hurt, saying: "We recovered the fallen vehicle overnight.

"It didn't have an impact on the service at all and we operated a normal two boat service on the Woolwich Ferry today."

The Met's Marine Accident Investigation team are investigating.

I bet the driver has one of them licences from Woolworths, or one from Karachi.

Bit of bad reporting! It was actually a white transit van, the yellow in the photo is a reflection of the light and the colour of the ferry! Drawback of obtaining your journalism through Twitter.

Heavy seas, the roll of the ship, etc etc. Perhaps the captain and the cabin boi was searching for that golden rivet.

Oh are you a marine surveyor?
I'm surprised you even know where it is. As you didn't know where North Woolwich was.
